#boycottMuzik? Not even once.
Ok, so everyone is calling for a boycott of MUZIK because of their role in getting #EDM banned from the EX grounds in order to monopolize and kill the competition, disguised under "save the kids".
I couldn't disagree with this more. Pull up a chair and let Uncle Kenny explain something to ya.
1) Your boycott won't work, because odds are most of you screaming for one NEVER go to MUZIK anyways.
2) They did nothing wrong (legally)
3) See number 1.
No, a "boycott" won't work, no, "protest parties" won't work. And even if it did work...so what? I guarantee there's someone else with a bag full of money and lawyers down at City Hall to lobby for something else that you may not notice as much, but sure as hell will suck as much. And that's the problem. The SYSTEM.
What WILL work...is getting involved in city politics! I know, it's boring, old people suck, politicians are all the same and your vote doesn't matter...bullshit. If your vote didn't matter, Prime Minister Harper wouldn't be launching the greatest assault on Canadian Democracy in recent memory. They WANT you to feel disenfranchised. You shouldn't. You are a valuable part of our social fabric and you MUST get involved in politics. Like Aristotle stated:
"Man is by nature a social animal; an individual who is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either beneath our notice or more than human. Society is something that precedes the individual. Anyone who either cannot lead the common life or is so self-sufficient as not to need to, and therefore does not partake of society, is either a beast or a god. ”
Politicians count on you feeling disenfranchised, marginalized, apathetic and powerless and when they feel like you may actually be waking up, they aren't above underhanded tricks like "The Fair Elections Act" to make sure you stay where you are. Why do you think we're stuck with so many shitty ones? Have you seen the shitshow at City Hall? Have you seen Denzil Minian-Wong's hairline? Helloooo, ROB FORD IS A CRACK HEAD AND HE'S MAYOR!!
Do you honestly believe these people are smarter than you? Braver than you? More competent than you? No. Abso-fucking-lutely not. This is what happens when you ignore politics. This is what happens when you think you don't matter and your vote doesn't count.
At some point some asshole in a cheap suit (looking at you Mammoliti) gets it in his brain to f*ck with something you value. And who is there to stand against them? No one. Because you feel like "it's not your thing". And that's the problem. You left the field wide open for them.
MUZIK did nothing wrong. At least not in the legal sense of the word. What happened on Monday, happens EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Right now there are people lobbying politicians to change zoning laws, change environmental bylaws, change something that puts more money into their pockets and screws you. Lobbyists are nothing new and they aren't illegal. And you've seen in the smallest, most insignificant way how lobbyists can affect your life.This is the system at work. It's fundamentally unfair and benefits those who can purchase access. Boycott MUZIK? no. Get involved in local politics? Yes.
Here's a list of your local Councillors...start paying attention to what these people are doing and if you're REALLY upset...there's an election around the corner...go get involved in a campaign or two (like I am), go run for office like @MorganBaskin is and make a REAL change!
You see, what they don't want you to know is that this is your world. YOU can make any change you want and despite democracies flaws, your votes DO count!!!
Don't boycott MUZIK, get active, get involved in politics, pay attention to who is your local councillor, MP & MPP and give 'em hell kids!
